I don't think of Chi-square as a test of association contrasts, but maybe differences in association? Not sure how to best phrase it. Thoughts?

: The link you give is irrelevant. It mentions chi-sq as a test of "discrepancy" (in lay terms) of theoretical from empirical distribution. The Fisher exact test is completely different.

Section 8.6
The text is not talking about the F test. A test of independence tests whether two variables are correlated or uncorrelated.
What I call 'discrepancy' is the gap between the two variables under consideration. See the attachment.
