French term

plateau libre

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Hi

Describing the Grand Palais Ephémère in Paris:

"un plateau libre, une page blanche sur laquelle chacun des exploitants peut projeter ses événements"

I found this other example of "plateau libre" with the same meaning:

"La médiathèque est conçue sur un plateau libre permettant toutes évolutions possibles"

Thanks!

Also: a different definition again, but still... "open stage":

open stage, also called thrust stage, or platform stage, theatrical stage without a proscenium, projecting into the audience and surrounded on three sides by the audience.

I don't know about a construction industry term but...

I like "blank canvas", a lot, but "plateau libre" appears to mean "open stage", e.g.:
https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/RC-020432/open-stage/

Compare with "open mike night" for stand-ups, poetry, etc.

Industry term? Is there a construction industry term for "plateau libre" as I intend to use "blank canvas" for "page blanche"?

open/untrammelled floorspace

Interestingly, this venue is built on the part of the Champs de Mars known as the 'plateau Joffre", where I used to hang out in 1980.

I think you need a word implying something larger than just a 'stage' and more specific than 'area'. The total groundtake is over 10,000 m².

In construction, 'plateau' refers to what is called a floor plate or a work floor, esp. referring to open-plan/landscaped office space, or as the French say, 'un open space': "QU’EST-CE QU’UN OPEN SPACE ? L’open space ou « plateau ouvert » est un aménagement de plus en plus courant dans les entreprises. Il consiste à ouvrir la surface de travail en éliminant les cloisons afin de réunir les équipes au sein d’un seul et même espace."

The building's arched structure means, I presume, that there are no columns in the middle of a it all.

neutral philgoddard : Stage is a metaphor, like "blank sheet of paper".

I let myself be influenced by 'Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering'. Engineers are serious people, they don't do metaphor.
agree writeaway : unless asker returns and changes the fields for this question, this can be considered to be a viable answer

Thanks. Had I seen this first, I needn't have commented as above.

agree Tony M : I agree! It's important not to mislead the reader into think this refers to some specific kind of 'stage' or 'platform' — as you say, it is 'plateau' in the sense of the floor of a building, these days often open-plan. I wouldn't use 'untrammelled' though

agree Daryo : yes here "plateau" is just a big flat hard floor surface - that could be filled with just about anything, // Also, "Grand Palais Ephémère" is a pretty good clue, patiently waiting to be noticed and picked up instead of being cheerfully ignored by most ...

open area

Top of my head suggestion.

empty stage

I think this is an improvement on Conor's answers, which are on the right lines.

a blank stage

Say what you see:

Compare that photo with:

Also a play on words with "a blank page".

I would go confidence 4, but since it's a creative question...

"A blank stage, a blank page..." works quite well I think, with the repetition.

I admit that authorial intention is an issue here, but "open stage" covers a few concepts, and that's actually an advantage here, unless anybody can read the mind of the author!

See the photo here:

read this: "open stage, also called thrust stage, or platform stage, theatrical stage without a proscenium, projecting into the audience and surrounded on three sides by the audience",

and draw your own conclusions.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : "Blank" doesn't work, because it goes on to say "blank sheet of paper". And "open stage" is confusing because, as your references show, it means something else.

neutral Tony M : Agree with Phil: these days, an 'open stage' tends to often be viewed like an 'open mic' session, which this is clearly not.

a stage without a set

A variation and clearly based on/inspired by other suggestions.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : There is no assumption this is actually any kind of theatrical 'stage', neither is there any sense in using a negative 'without a set'. I don't fundame, ntally disagree with 'stage' on its own, but your addition makes it even more wrong.

three suggestions had stage which you don't like but you only disagreed with mine. Mmm
