Spanish term

C. hipotenusa

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care Spirometry
Taken from a medical report from a Spanish hospital, specifically the results of a spirometry test with regard to allergy testing:
"ESPIROMETRIA": C. Hipotenusa. FVC 85%, FEV1 87%, FEV1/FVC 88.16, FEF (25-75) 80%.

A further study used the term: C. Obstructiva

Thanks!

Discussion

David Russell (asker) Oct 17, 2022:
Later in the text the term "constrictive curve" appears in full
Muriel Vasconcellos Oct 16, 2022:
Area under the curve (AUC) In spirometry to test lung function.the area under the curve (AUC) - in other
words a sagging hypotenuse - represents the degree of obstruction. Ideally, the hypotenuse is straight. See illustrations at:

I undergo the test about once a year and my pulmonologist explained has shown me what it meant.
philgoddard Oct 16, 2022:
I'm not convinced that C is curve, unless David knows otherwise. What about "C obstructiva"?
Muriel Vasconcellos Oct 16, 2022:
@Phil:See calculations for determining the length of a curved hypotenuse:

Muriel Vasconcellos Oct 16, 2022:
@Phil The illustrations on the Internet show which it looks like. It is the curve that connects two connecting lines where a hypotenuse would connect in a straight line.
philgoddard Oct 16, 2022:
How do you know that C is curve? Surely a hypotenuse is straight by definition.
David Russell (asker) Oct 15, 2022:
The "C" refers to curve. "hipotenusa" appears twice, so I don't think it is a typo. I suspect it refers to the shape of the graph produced by the spirometry test.
philgoddard Oct 15, 2022:
Could it be a typo? FVC is forced vital capacity, and FEV1 is forced exploratory volume in one second.

Unlike another responder, *I assume you have in mind a curved hypotenuse* . To find the area we'd need to know the exact shape of the hypotenuse.

Not my area of expertise, but I found links referring to the "hypotenuse" which suggests, as you said, the shape of a graph for cases of asthma/COPD (Spirometry). I also found (below) "Obstructive Spirometry" shorturl.at/chqZ3

The degree of obstruction can be estimated by the area under the curve (AUC).11,12 To achieve this, the area of a right-angled triangle (At) with one cathetus originating from the extrapolation of the peak expiratory flow (PEF) at the level of the abscissa (Xp) and the other running from this point to the point of residual volume, with the hypotenuse connecting both ends is calculated (Fig. 1b). Specific software is used to determine expiratory AUC, which, when subtracted from the At can be used to quantify the area Au (between the hypotenuse of the triangle and the EFVC).
