Spanish term

apremiante

Spanish to English Other Philosophy Academic
El mundo actual, con su ánimo individualista, materialista, hedonista, utilitarista, consumista, ultraproductivo, cuantitativo, gregario, apremiante etc., muestra escaso interés por las eternas preguntas y en modo alguno las reconoce como factores incondicionales e invariables —semejantes a las constantes físicas (v.g. la gravitación, la velocidad de la luz)— de suprema relevancia simbólica y vital, de cuyo vigor depende la totalidad de las actividades humanas.

General context: same academic article on ageing, longevity, etc.

Not sure 'urgent' or 'pressing' flows well in context. Had wondered about "pressured", "hurried", "hasty", but not sure they would be accurate in context.

Very grateful for your views. Thank you in anticipation!

Discussion

Toni Castano Nov 29, 2022:
@Domini "Spirit" is a good choice. I agree.
Domini Lucas (asker) Nov 29, 2022:
@Toni you're right of course. I had assumed spirit (probably because spirit of the age came to mind). Did you have something else in mind?
Toni Castano Nov 28, 2022:
Ánimo apremiante Domini, whatever your choice to solve this new challenge in your very demanding text, do not forget to think of "ánimo", which is key to achieving a successful rendering of the term. "Apremiante" refers to "ánimo", like the other words of the series, so the English noun you choose for "ánimo" will be decisive for the selection of the adjective.
Good luck.

hurried

Seems to go well in the context of the other descriptors, i.e. "hedonista, utilitarista, consumista, ultraproductivo, cuantitativo, gregario, apremiante"

Apremiar: "Dar prisa, compeler a alguien a que haga algo con prontitud"

The idea of demanding also goes well with the idea of "compeler", so perhaps "demanding" could also work.

Also see this sense: "Compeler u obligar a alguien con mandamiento de autoridad a que haga algo"
Example sentence:

Compeler u obligar a alguien con mandamiento de autoridad a que haga algo

Peer comment(s):

agree Beatriz Ramírez de Haro : Yes, "demanding" fits the idea.

rushed

Synonym of hurried (pax William).
BTW, I was going to post "pressing" until you cast doubt upon it.

urging

Hard to choose from so many great options!

Maybe "urging" better captures the two-fold essence of "apremiante" (the time dimension of "urgency" and that certain degree of external force [prompting, pressing, forcing, coaxing]).

For this context, I would go as far as translating "apremiante" as "ever-urging"

Also, the present participle adjective looks like a closer reflection of the "-ante"
suffix which indicates the doing of the action expressed by the root.
