Cheminée

French to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Séparateur d’eau, moteur à hydrogène, véhicule, pile à combustible

Flue

Chimneys, Vents, and Flues aren’t the same. If you’ve been using these terminologies interchangeably, it’s time you learn how to use them correctly. They don’t just have different names but also serve a slightly different purpose. It’s important to understand what each does.
Chimneys
A chimney is a vertical passage extending out of your roof that allows combustion products to exit your home. It can vent any type of fuel. Some of the chimneys pass through other parts of the house. Chimneys are built using brick, mortar, and masonry.
:
A flue is simply a passage through which smoke, gas, and other combustion by-products can exit. These can either be pipes, vents, or chimneys.

Vents also help you remove the by-products of combustion from your home. Unlike chimneys, they require temperature protection and are, therefore, not suitable for wood-burning fireplaces.

Fuel cell system having enhanced co2 capture
Abstract
A carbon dioxide capture system for removing carbon dioxide from a flue gas produced by a combustion power plant. The system includes an electrolyzer cell configured to receive a flue gas comprising carbon dioxide and output a first exhaust stream comprising an enriched flue gas comprising carbon dioxide. The system further includes a fuel cell configured to receive the first exhaust stream and output a second exhaust stream comprising carbon dioxide.
:
The flue gas, now substantially depleted of carbon dioxide, is vented out of the system 10 as a cathode exhaust stream through a cathode exhaust line 38.
:
This vent gas, compared to the flue gas outputted from the combustion chamber 50, is substantially depleted of carbon dioxide.

Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of the application of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC) in a natural gas fired combined cycle power plant to capture CO2 from the exhaust of the gas turbine. The gas turbine flue gases are used as cathode feeding for a MCFC, where CO2 is transferred from the cathode to anode side, concentrating the CO2 in the anode exhaust.
:
6. Conclusions
This paper has discussed the analysis of the application of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC) in natural gas fired combined cycles to capture CO2 from the exhaust of the gas turbine. The gas turbine flue gases are used as cathode feeding for a MCFC, based on Ansaldo Fuel Cells experience, fed with natural gas processed by an external reformer.

neutral philgoddard : Providing huge numbers of references doesn't make your answer more authoritative. But as your penultimate one shows, a flue (conduit de cheminée) is not the same as a chimney.

chimney

I think you should just go for the simplest and most obvious translation, especially as this is a patent. We know that it's located inside a cylinder, so is possibly another cylinder, and that it induces turbulence.

It's obviously not a chimney on someone's roof.
neutral mrrafe : If I were the patent examiner I would take less comfort, not more, from simplicity or obviousness “especially if” a patent. The purpose of the patent is to forestall controversies resulting from overbroad terminology.

(exhaust/Pitot) tube, pipe

In fuel cells in a weightless environment, the term 'Pitot tube' is used for such a cheminée, or similar.

"A fuel cell power system for use in a weightless environment, such as in space, includes a device for removing water from a water-hydrogen mixture condensed from the exhaust from the fuel cell power section of the system. Water is removed from the mixture in a centrifugal separator, and is fed into a holding, pressure operated water discharge valve via a Pitot tube. Entrained nondissolved hydrogen is removed from the Pitot tube by a bleed orifice in the Pitot tube before the water reaches the water discharge valve. Water discharged from the valve thus has a substantially reduced hydrogen content."
https://patents.justia.com/patent/4800138

I cannot say if Pitot tube is said for fuel cells in a gravity environment, but I have seen reference to simply 'tube' or 'pipe' for such things in fuel-cell separators, in addition to the 'exhaust tube' referenced below.

"The exhaust system includes a fuel cell exhaust pipe in fluid communication with a fuel cell stack and an exhaust tube."
https://ia800402.us.archive.org/6/items/AllPriorArt/AllPrior...

"The separator has an exhaust tube for exhausting the water-depleted vapor stream from the separator. The exhaust tube has (1) a mouth at one end that is substantially concentric with the collection tube radially inboard the cylindrical inner wall of the collection tube [** this sounds much like what is described in your text **] to receive the water-depleted stream passing through the separator from the collection chamber, and (2) an outlet end for discharging the water-depleted vapor stream from the separator."
https://patents.google.com/patent/US6579637
[Fuel cell system having a compact water separator]

"The exhaust gas discharged from the fuel electrode outlet of the fuel cell 2 is conveyed to a water separator 6 via an exhaust gas circulation piping 13. Entrained water is separated from the exhaust gas, and is discharged to the outside of the system via a drain exhaust tube "

I've carried out many, many patent translations, and have mostly translated this as "funnel". I'm not 100% certain, but as close as can be.
