Spanish term

afloramientos

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Archaeology Ceramics in the Alhambra
An article about excavating the Secano of the Alhambra:

La zona del Secano se sitúa sobre un substrato geológico de carácter conglomerado y la elevación de la roca está sujeta a constantes irregularidades y son frecuentes los ***afloramientos***, ocasiones en las que resulta difícil distinguir dicho sustrato de los depósitos sucesivos

Por su parte, la zona norte venía establecida por el ***afloramiento*** de un nivel de circulación realizado con baldosas de barro que daba acceso al horno C. El área situada en el centro, junto con las estructuras descritas, conformaría el espacio de taller.

I've seen that previous KudoZ answers suggest 'outcrops' for this but I'm not sure it works in this context. My dictionary of architectural terms suggests this means blow/bail, the undesired appearance of water/material in an excavation, but I am struggling to find references to this in English.

The verb 'aflorar' is also used throughout:

Sin embargo, se encontraban completamente arrasadas, conservándose únicamente unas pocas hiladas en el mejor de los casos, cuando no se habían perdido completamente, ***aflorando*** el sustrato geológico.

En el sondeo 1, la zona norte se había conservado en mejores condiciones al presentar una mayor cantidad de depósitos acumulados, mientras que la franja sur se caracterizaba por unos niveles de arrasamiento más acusados en los que llegaba a ***aflorar*** el sustrato geológico en algunos puntos.

Does it mean something more basic like 'emerge' in this case?

Thanks for your help.

Aflorar means to expose in this context.

afloramientos "Outcroping" is a geological term. The first use of the term is correct.
The second use concerning a lane is not the best option.
According to the second context, it is better described by:
... al emerger....
... emerging from...
Luck!

I shall try to ascertain if "outcrop" does the "work" both as a noun and verb in this particular context.

Yes, I think you're right. I was using the dictionary for the more architectural parts of the text but it's not as useful here. And so in this geological context, 'outcrop' would seem to work. Any suggestions on whether it also works here as the verb?
Toni Castano Jul 15, 2023:
Thank you! Thank you very much for your information and explaining the reasons for your misgivings concerning "outcrop". I have to say I do not fully agree with the definition provided by Mr Ching (for this context!), I mean, I am not sure if your dictionary is the right one for this highly "specialised" area to provide a really helpful guidance. I believe this particular query has more to do with “geology” and “archaeology” than with “architecture”.
Charlotte Bower (asker) Jul 15, 2023:
Of course, it's 'Diccionario visual de arquitectura' by Francis D. K. Ching. It describes 'afloramiento' as 'aparición no deseada de un flujo de agua y materia sólida en una excavación, debida a una excesiva presión del agua exterior'. I think this sense fits more with the first example than the second perhaps, but I'm unsure if they are talking about the general character of the area surveyed, or problems while excavating.
Toni Castano Jul 15, 2023:
@Charlotte May we know what dictionary of architectural terms you are using to solve this and other doubts of your text? I concede I am not sure yet, but "outcrop" does seem to go in the right direction.

appearance of objects, items or minerals

In this context an elevated or raised rock made way for the occurrence or the appearance of discoveries such as clay tiles.
In geological terms it stems from layers, plates, or substrates of rock formations beneath ground level.

A definition explains it's an occurrence that causes something from underground to rise to the surface.

A reference explains ancient populations who made townships which were vacated and re-built at a later date. It explains that culture layers lie between the initial and subsequent habitations.

Is "outcrop" the right term here?

Based on the exchange in the discussion area:
When it is referred to “geological substrata”, the word “outcrop” is a fine choice. In the context provided here, it seems correct to me to speak of “outcrop of geological material” (afloramiento de material geológico) being “material” the substrata. But my doubt in this context is whether “afloramiento” (outcrop) can also be applied to “archaeological material” that emerges spontaneously, not just “geological”. I am not really sure if “outcrop” (alternatively “basset”) is more appropriate here than “blow/bail”, your own suggestion.

As for the use of “aflorar” as a verb, I think something like “emerge” (or “open up”, but I prefer “emerge”) could be a right way to go, but of course you will have to “restructure” your translation phrases a little bit to fit all the pieces together.
I mean, something like “Outcrops emerging/opening up…”.
