Spanish term

contravalor en euros

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Accounting memoria consolidada -
I am having some problems to understand and translate this sentence on the following paragraph:

I would be really grateful for your help and any suggestions.
Thanks a lot!

Discussion

John Rynne Aug 23, 2023:
Responding to Francois Just because there is an FX market, doesn't mean that the text in this case involves an exchange of one currency for another. All they are saying is that they had a notional of (say) USD XXXXX, which is the same as EUR 79 milllion odd. Those amounts did not change hands. They were not paid or received in exchange for goods or services. So neither of them is a countervalue. The fact that amounts of currency do change hands in the FX market is beside the point.

What Is Notional Value?
Notional value is a term often used by derivatives traders to refer to the total value of the underlying asset in a contract. It can be the total value of a position, how much value a position controls, or an agreed-upon amount in a contract. Put simply, it is the face value that is used to determine payments on a financial asset. This term is used when describing derivative contracts in the options, futures, forwards, and currency markets.

What is countervalue in finance?

A countervalue is compensation, in the form of commercial value, in exchange for another value. It can be represented as a good, a service or as money. In the economic context, a countervalue supposes the replication or compensation of a certain value by means of another.
Peer comment(s):

disagree John Rynne : your definition refers to an exchange of one thing for another. The question is about the equivalent in euro of an amount in another currency. One is not being exchanged for the other.

Sorry! Currencies are sold and bought. See the FX market.How would you know that one currency is equivalent to another without an FX market?
