Discussion

Boris Shapiro Apr 23:
A word to the wise Some time ago I was translating a paper on constitutional matters into EN. As it referenced the Russian Constitution, I searched around for an official translation. There was an official-looking website, constitution.ru (created back in 2001 and still available via Wayback Machine), with the text in Russian, English, French, and German. It was made by a firm that listed a whole ton of official government ministries, court, etc as their client. And its English translation contained glaring errors.

What's the takeaway, then? Be very careful when looking for translated EN versions of your local legislation. There is actually very little change of finding one translated by a professional linguist.

defendant be sentenced with due consideration to the fact that they are a repeat offender

Selamlar,

Yani, we request that the defendant be sentenced with due consideration to the fact that they are (i.e. he/she is) a repeat offender.

Mükerrirlere özgü infaz rejimi"ni tek başına çevirmek isterseniz, "legislation governing the sentencing of repeat offenders" kullanabilirsiniz. İngiltere'de bu, Sentencing Act 2000"in 313 ila 315 maddelerine tabi imiş.

agree Boris Shapiro : 'Repeat offender' certainly seems to be widely used, at least in BBC usage. upd: noticed it's public relations, not legalese, so definitely 'repeat offenders', not the court-speak term 'recidivist'.
