Check brake operation manually to assure brake system operates. When
rotated clockwise ratchet pawl (item 17) should click and brake engages.
When rotated counter-clockwise the ratchet pawl (item 17) engages ratchet
gear (item 5) and brake disengages. Action must be smooth with no hang-ups.

@ Asker I don't really see any problem with your 'ratchet gear' being a 'ratchet wheel' — it's not uncommon in EN to have a mere 'wheel' referred (imprecisely, perhaps!) to as a 'gear' when there is some special 'driving / driven' aspect to it, without its actually necessarily being an actual 'pinion'.

@ Asker In your proposed draft translation, you seem to be using 'ratchet' and 'brake' interchangeably; perhaps you know something from your wider context that we don't, but on the evidence of the context given alone, they may well be different elements.

Vérifier le fonctionnement du frein manuellement pour s'assurer que le système de freinage fonctionne. Une rotation dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre (article 10) déclenche un clic et le frein s'engage. Lorsque la rotation a lieu en sens contraire des aiguilles d'une montre le cliquet (article 10) engage la roue à rochet et le frein se désengage. Le mouvement doit être fluide, sans blocages/l'opération doit être fluide sans accroc.
