The scientific name for sun dogs. Either of two colored luminous spots that appear at roughly 22 degrees on both sides of the sun at the same elevation. They are caused by the refraction of sunlight passing through ice crystals. They are most commonly seen during winter in the middle latitudes and are exclusively associated with cirriform clouds. They are also known as mock suns.

Fenomenul cunoscut ca parhelia (Soare fals sau, mai celebru, "Sun dog") este un fenomen optic atmosferic intalnit frecvent, asociat refractiei luminii, produs al unei mari cantitati de particule de gheata aflata in nori de tip cirrus. Foarte asemanatoare halourilor (de fapt pot si obisnuiesc sa aiba loc in acelasi timp), se manifesta la aproximativ 22º in stanga si/sau dreapta Soarelui ca pete de lumina stralucitoare, de multe ori colorate. Cuvantul parhelie vine din greaca (para-helios) si s-ar traduce prin "langa Soare" sau "insotitorul Soarelui".
