social/community architecture
British participants at the Pittsburgh conference were predominantly advocates of "community architecture" (better known in the U.S. as "social architecture"). Though the movement's roots go back more than twenty years, it has been given considerable impetus and notoriety since the Prince of Wales endorsed the cause in 1984.
"Community architecture" starts from the premise that people must be given more control and more effective choices over their lives, in part as a way of avoiding the social disorders that have plagued advanced industrial societies. This view holds that many social and economic ills can be traced to mismanagement of the built environment. Thus the objective is to develop neighborhoods and cities that enrich people's lives by being responsive to their needs and aspirations. The key is to get the process of development right, and that requires getting the people who live, work, and play in an environment to become actively involved in its creation and management.
