Word and compatibility issue

Dear Colleagues,

I've had problems opening simple Word files from one specific client. The problem is apparently due to the pictures in the document. The agency and other colleagues manage to open it without any problem.

I cannot give you more details, but I just wondered if any of you had an idea what this problem may be due to. Do I have to add an "element" to my program? Do I have to enable / disable an option somewhere?

Mac versus PC? Nov 20, 2007

For some versions of Word, there are compatibility issues between Macs and PCs. Usually the problem can be solved by asking the person who sent the file save it in RTF format instead of as a .doc file. The resulting file is larger, but should be easier to open on more versions of Word.

I know you said you can't give any more info ... but we need it! Things like is it crashing? Is there a specific error message? Does the file open but then behave funny? And what leads you to believe the pictures are the issue?

Steven is correct about Mac and PC, but only to a point: They have been quite compatible for many years. Other than the new XML-type format, you would have to have one platform be very old and one be very new to have cross-platform incompatibility.

In theory, the Mac and PC versions of Word have been compatible for years. Certainly Microsoft resolved the character-set conflicts many years ago. However, many people had trouble opening Word 2001 (for Mac) files in Word 2003 (for PC). They simply refused to open. It didn't happen with all files, but it occurred often enough to be a serious problem. The workaround was to save the files in RTF format.

Answer to Word crash Nov 27, 2007

Thanks for your answers.

Actually, it has nothing to do with Mac or Windows. What happens is the following:

I open the document and Word crashes. The document is a standard Word document but with pictures. The problem seems to come from those pictures. Other computers can open it, but nor mine. My version of Word is 2000. It should be ok.
