"I don't know" at second place. That's pretty alarming, don't you think?

My projection of the second half of 2012, financially, is definitely 'good'. With the acquisition of a major client, I can say with certainty that it will be better than the first half.

I have no projections. I take each job as it comes. I'd guess that given the last few years have been good to excellent, the next six months will follow the same course, but who knows!

It looks good for the next month or so since I have a big project lined - but "a" as in only one project being the operative word. Uncertainty is the nature of our business. However, more importantly... Edited out last line. Nevertheless a back-to-back poll suggested by "anonymous" is still fishy in my books.

I have already written 2012 off as a lost year. I do not expect things to change until the world economy starts to grow again.
If only I could know in advance when the next project is coming... My repeat clients are my bread and butter, they provide me the bulk of my income, but in general I have no idea when the next project will be coming in. That's one of the drawbacks of freelancing, isn't it?

Strange enough | Jul 15, 2012 |
It is strange that "Good" is on first place, followed by "Decent", while so many are complaining about miserably low rates and the economic crisis. During the first half of 2012 I found myself getting more job offers than I could work on. I expect this to continue during the second half of 2012.

I am mostly booked for the coming six weeks, after which I have contracted for a further three months of slog. I should add that this is the first time in my life that this has happened. I plan to hibernate for the whole of December, but will emerge to enjoy Christmas fare.

I have enough work (if not 100% confirmed, at least 80% likely) to keep me out of mischief through most of the autumn, but allowing me some time to continue the professional development I want to do and add in other small projects here and there. Yes, this is a first for me, too - must be doing something right!

But that's OK .....I won't have much time to do translating this year as we are making the move from Brazil to Portugal, along with two dogs and three cats. Once installed, though, I have promised myself I will make a BIG effort to get translating work!

It is hard to make exact predictions during the summer doldrums, but I am feeling quite positive. I have been picking up a better class of client and have plans to acquire more direct clients. I have had a few slow periods this year, but the totals at midyear are better than last so I must be doing something right. I would love to see a poll on revenue trends broken down by language pair. I think that makes a huge difference, particularly with the problems in Europe.
