They are terrible... Oct 12, 2023

...if we're talking about fields such as literature or marketing.
They are quite good with more technical texts though.

They are OK Oct 12, 2023

By that I mean, they are far better than the results from machine translation which turns into nonsense with pretend words, but they still need a lot of work by a translator. I am currently working on a job like this, and well, I still have to do a lot of research since ChatGPT has a tendency to directly translate terms from English to my language and present them as the established terms. Which they are not. Not even close.

I wasn't aware that ChatGPT could "do" translations. The mind boggles. I shudder to think what the outcomes would be like. In fact, I prefer not to know.

Terrible Oct 12, 2023

I haven’t used ChatGPT much because in my first experiences the results were as terrible as terrible can be in all my language pairs, though worst in French, Spanish and Italian than in English to Portuguese. To make matters worse, sometimes it lies very convincingly, answers questions incorrectly though sounding good. It broke the little faith I placed on it. It’s definitely not for me, it’s just a kind of “parrot”.

Deeply Terrible Oct 12, 2023

For technical texts applying AI/MT-applications the target text is in general terrible (if translated into Dutch). The Dutch resembles EU-(Brussels)/Flemish 'Dutch' style, not Standaardnederlands. Moreover they translate on a word by word basis, instead of keeping in mind how sentences should be structured, eg for user manuals which have to be in conformity with the standard NEN5509 User Manuals.
Revising/proofing/editing of such texts takes about 25% more time than translating from scratch...

ChatGPT is NOT a machine translation tool! Oct 12, 2023

So why should we use it as such?

Not bad at all... Oct 12, 2023

But I'll keep it at that. This is just another thread that will oppose people who think MT is terrible because they don't know better as they didn't properly train themselves in the use of MT by exploring it for months and months, against people who know the real benefits of machine translation because they learnt how to use it in their advantage.

I would just like to add that I didn't answer this poll because the possible answers are poorly formulated. I mean, there's a whole world between answer A "terrible" and answer B "OK". MT translations are not terrible, but they are obviously also not OK because that would mean that editing wouldn't be really necessary.

No, idea. I have never used ChatGPT for anything.
And what is meant by 'or similar'?

I took the liberty to assume they mean machine translation in general, but this is indeed another poorly formulated poll question.

GPT is my twin brother, we complement and finish each other’s sentences.

Simple answer Oct 12, 2023

I can't compare myself to machines like ChatGPT.
In my experience, ChatGPT's answers fall a long way short.
I don't see the point of this tool being used here as MT. It can help us get answers for certain terms, but it can't replace a human translator or being compared to one.

I assumed that by "similar" it was meant Bing and Bard, but I haven’t tried them and I don't intend to...

I have tried Bard and ChatGPT but do not use them as MT tools. It's not their main function.
