I do have another source of income in that we rent out a studio at the bottom of the garden and sometimes have lodgers (mostly the offspring of faraway friends coming up to Paris to study).
However, it's my income from translation that pays the bills, we could never live off just the rent.

I have a pension from my 20 years as staff translator at one of the EU institutions. What the largest portion is varies from one month to the other: my pension is stable but the income from my freelance work is as unstable as a kangaroo on a trampoline...

We bought two flats besides our main house when we settled in Spain after making an insane profit reselling our main home in Morocco. Renting them both (long term, not the AirBnB mania that deprives actual workers from finding flats in city centers) brings 15-20% of my translation income to the household.
Savings at the bank bring peanuts.

The household has yet another source of income, with my wife now working as a freelancer as well. It may consistently reach 50% and more of my translation income soon.

It's much longer to list sources of spending.

Land Nov 29, 2023

I rent about 15 acres of our land to a local farmer. The annual rent - which I have never raised - pays for a small part of our outgoings for one month of the year, so it doesn't contribute much at all.

However, if you leave pasture ungrazed it rapidly reverts to scrubland and (surprisingly quickly) to forest, and we are already surrounded by woodland here - there is no shortage. The land is of good quality and it would be a shame to effectively destroy it for agricultural purposes.

If I didn't have his livestock on the land I'd have to buy a mower for the tractor and mow it several times a year to prevent it from going wild.

The sheep are cheaper, and they fertilise as they go.

While I make a very comfortable living out of my translation work alone, my stocks are starting to earn me some real money, too.

Buying and selling some shares in the stock market when it's not oscillating that much. Always staying aware to take advantage whenever the stock exchange plunges to buy it low, this also applies to cryptocurrency in case you want to profit by selling when the price ascends, Bitcoin is a good call if you're thinking in the very long run (supply and demand rule and scarcity), I'd rather use mine properly as a currency than a source of income.

I am a creative writer as a full-time employee. Unfortunately, there are few translation jobs in my language pair on this website.
