@Neil I'm not seeing a recommendation here, I'm seeing a request or possibly an "order". Citing one translated article to support that argument doesn't really mean anything.
As I understand it, Lorena's answer is slightly different, in that it means the doctor may order the test if he or she feels it necessary. The way I understood your wording, with the use of "prescribe", was as if genotyping were a kind of therapy (which it is clearly not).
Perhaps you will at least concede that "prescribe" is rarely used to mean "order" or "request" in this context, i.e., you wouldn't normally hear a phrase such as "X-rays will be prescribed for those patients that require it".
And obviously I might be completely wrong here, but it also occurred to me that you had taken Lorena's idea and adapted it (incorrectly).
Olive branch: I do agree with your interpretation of "concepto médico" as "medical criteria", though :-)

Yes, nothing really wrong with your answer, Neil - apologies, I was just following on from Robert's comment, and 'prescribing' a test does sound odd to me although I see that your link supports the usage.

@Catherine AND Robert Excuse me if I'm wrong, but "Lorena's suggestion" appears to simply paraphrase my own suggestion, albeit in a more informal fashion. As for "concepto médico", the translation will depend on the specific context, but in general if you substitute "concepto" for "criterio" in the Spanish, it makes more sense. It means the medical criteria applied by the physician when prescribing/recommending treatments.

thanks everyone, Lorena's suggestion does seem to make sense. Unfortunately the deadline was such that I've already submitted it, although I did get the gist of it the same, if not quite as nicely worded.

Just a question, for future reference, how would one generally translate or understand 'concepto médico'? Is that just something like 'patient profile' i.e. just the medical specifics of a particular case?

@Robert When doctors prescribe, they are basically just making a recommendation. Strictly speaking, it's a referral for tests, but in broad strokes, I don't see anything wrong with "prescribing" or ordering tests.

Unless I am missing something This just seem like a very wordy and very flowery (don't you love Spanish?) way of saying "doctor may order genotyping/genotype test if needed".

Certain genotypes respond better to anti-viral treatments such as interferon. I happen to know this as I was successfully treated myself for hepatitis C a few years ago and was lucky enough to have the responsive genotype myself.

Hay dos tipos de análisis de resistencia a los medicamentos: la prueba de genotipo y la de fenotipo. La prueba de genotipo no es otra cosa que una inspección meticulosa del VIH presente en la sangre de un individuo. Si el VIH no responde a un medicamento o combinación de medicamentos, se examina la materia genética del virus (ARN) y se trata de encontrar pequeños cambios en su estructura, a los que se llaman "mutaciones." Mientras algunas mutaciones son inofensivas, otras pueden hacer que el VIH se vuelva menos sensible a un medicamento designado para detener su multiplicación. Con el tiempo, ese VIH acumula mutaciones adicionales, las cuales impiden que el virus responda a dicha medicación. Las pruebas de genotipo buscan mutaciones específicas asociadas con la resistencia a un medicamento en particular.
