Arizona? Jun 22, 2006

University of Arizona at Tucson,当然不能先告诉她那里是沙漠

Or NO NO NO, chance, you do not want to send her to Arizona. There is Nothing there! Even the "trees" they have do not have any leaves! Saguaros are all they have for trees in Tucson. Tacos and beans are all they eat for food! I mean to send a girl from the banks of the Seine or the beautiful Loire Valley to the Arizona desert is indeed If you are not convinced, I will dig out some photos I took around University of Arizona at Tucson and email some to you. In a few days if you like.

But if you go to Arizona as a tourist, you will enjoy the spectacular views of the desert to its south and the Grand Canyon to its north. When the desert wild flowers are in bloom, the colors are amazingly beautiful! But that is noly for a very short period of the year. You do not want to live there! Believe me.

University of Arizona at Tucson Jun 22, 2006

Chance,

I agree with wherestip and David. I was just kidding about going to University of Arizona, but its surroundings are not as bad as you may think and it is really a good school. (That is also the university which offered 方励之 a job as a Professor of Physics and Astronomy in 1989.) Take a tour at

When my younger son was in high school, as the Internet was not so popular at that time, we had to drive from Los Angeles to Phoenix and Tucson to visit Arizona State University at Phoenix and University of Arizona at Tucson (a round trip of about 1600 kilometers in the desert). We also visited almost all Univ. of California campuses from Berkeley down to San Diego. When I went to Houston on business, I drove several hours from Houston to UT-Austin. When I was in Milwaukee on business, I drove two hours to visit Univ. of Wisconsin at Madison. Some UC campuses offered my son scholarship, but he finally chose Univ. of Wisconsin at Madison because he wanted "freedom"! For his "freedom", I had to pay the tuition for non-Wisconsin resident that was more than three times as high as the tuition for Wisconsin resident.

University of Texas at Austin, University of Wisconsin at Madison and University of Arizona at Tucson are among the so-called Public Ivies, just as University of California at Berkeley and University of Michigan at Ann Harbor.

As we were talking about Arizona yesterday, see what is acutally going on there today:

Enough to scare you now?

While much of the world is still having spring flowers and the trees are getting fully shady and darker green for the summer, the American Southwest has already dried up. Here the hills and deserts start to turn green around Christmas and by late April or early May, the grass has already become yellow. It only takes several days of sunshine to dry out the grass completely, so the ground is covered with it. Any spark will start a huge fire that will burn like crazy.
